Information Seeking Behaviors of First Year students: Effective intervention in improving the information they use In-Person
Participants will collaboratively use an assignment from their course to identify the role domain knowledge, skills, and information seeking play in completing that assignment. Participants identify obstacle students may encounter when completing an assignment, and explore appropriate interventions would be helpful in remediation, especially regarding information management skills. These skills focus on three areas in which information literacy instruction can improve student success: crafting the research question through narrowing an area of interest, constructing a search using descriptive words from the research question(s), and techniques for evaluating the accuracy and relevance of sources retrieved from a search. Critical thinking skills are emphasized along the way. In addition, the presenter provides an overview of two studies: Students’ analysis of an opinion piece in LIS 1010 and the research process students used in locating material for a research paper in second semester composition class [1030].
